Weather is a daily phenomenon and fits perfectly into a routine. Observing the weather is a simple activity that can be both engaging and educational, especially in one-on-one settings or homeschooling situations. You can make it a fun Puppet Weather Activity that helps children develop awareness of their environment while fostering curiosity and vocabulary development. You could introduce this activity with a playful approach, for example:
“Imagine your puppet starts the day sitting on the floor with their bag, a bunch of weather cards, and a book, ready to explore the weather together.”
Always Talking About the Weather?
Picture my puppet, JaNee, thoughtfully packing her bag. As she picks up her book, a stack of weather cards spills onto the floor. She looks at them curiously and starts thinking aloud:
“Hmm, these cards show different kinds of weather. I wonder—what does this one with the sun mean? Oh, maybe that’s when it’s sunny outside! And this one with clouds, does that mean it’s cloudy? What about the one with clouds and lines underneath it? Could that be rain?”
JaNee holds up each card, pausing to invite the child to share their thoughts:
“What do you think this card shows? Have you seen weather like this before?”
This type of interaction encourages the child to observe, describe, and make connections to their own experiences.
Exploring Together
As the activity continues, JaNee might look more closely at the cards and wonder:
“Oh, this card has little blocks falling from a cloud. Could that be hail? Do you know what hail is like? Does it feel soft, or does it hurt when it falls?”
“And look at this one! There are stars under the cloud. Is that snow? I’ve heard that snowflakes are tiny and soft. Have you ever seen snow? What does it feel like?”
She might pick up a card with lightning bolts and say,
“These arrows look a bit scary! Is this lightning? Do you remember the time we saw flashes in the sky and heard loud booms? What do you think causes that?”
This way, the puppet’s curiosity and questions guide the child into a discussion about different weather conditions.
How to Use This Activity
Once JaNee has explored all the cards, she could share her idea:
“I want to use these cards to keep track of the weather today! Maybe we can look outside together in the morning, choose a card, and then check again in the afternoon. What kind of weather do you think we’ll see later today?”
This activity can easily be expanded by hanging the cards on a wall or board and using them throughout the day. Encourage the child to look outside and choose the card that best represents the current weather. Over time, they can start to notice patterns and changes, building their understanding of how weather works.
By involving the puppet in this way, you create a fun, interactive routine that helps the child develop observation skills while enjoying quality time with their puppet companion.
